The application of the Battery Management System is expanding and its market is growing. According to the latest report and analysis from P&S Market Research, the global battery management system market is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 14.5% during the period of 2020 – 2030. The revenue is expected to increase from 5.1 billion dollars in 2019 to 22.3 billion dollars by 2030.

One of the factors that have boosted the demand for BMS is the use of Li-ion battery technology for various applications due to its higher energy density, the longer life cycle of batteries and better resilience. A well designed, integrated and decentralized BMS architecture is found to be essential for the proper functioning and safety of Li-ion battery packs.

Furthermore, the following reasons are attributed to the growing demand for BMS:-

  1. Growing Electric Vehicle Ecosystem

Recently, ETAuto conducted a virtual round-table – ‘Post COVID-19: Future of Electric Vehicles Global and India’. The experts were unanimous in their opinion that despite the COVID-19 induced setback, the EV industry remains strong especially in a big market like India. On the global level, there is a rising inclination towards the need for eco-friendly vehicles. Many countries like the US, UK, Germany, Japan and most recently New Zealand have joined the Electrical Vehicle initiative – EVI. It is a multi-government policy forum dedicated to accelerating the introduction and adoption of electric vehicles. This has powered the sale of an efficient Battery Management System.

The Director and Head of EV at Frost & Sullivan UK, Mr. Jose Serras-Pereira further opined that Li-ion production will boom in India. “Batteries, power electronics, thermal management and Battery Management Systems will offer significant opportunities to localize and establish a comprehensive supplier ecosystem in India by 2025.”

  1. Rising Demand For Renewable Energy

The pandemic is widely seen as an eye-opener because it has laid bare the disadvantages of depending on fossil fuel, its storage and distribution problems. It is now realized that health and environmental threats are for real and embracing alternative energy solutions today is a necessity for a better future. India too is looking towards this direction.

So, how does Battery Management System help in fulfilling the need for renewable energy?

The renewable energy generated for electricity or for powering various applications is not steady in nature. Therefore, it is sometimes wasted away unable to fulfil the demand. It is important to note that the energy storage system will be the key to solve this problem. Energy storage systems vary in form and size depending on the type of stored energy and include batteries (capacity range of 1, 00200 MW). This is where the energy storage system is necessary and the battery management system can be a game-changer by optimizing it. Battery Management System controls how storage is used. In wind and solar power, BMS is used to control the output fluctuations. It has multiple applications today.

BMS And Its Applications

A BMS is an intelligent component or a software layer in the battery pack which extends its life and improves efficiency by balancing the cells, preventing battery damage, optimizing operation and providing advanced monitoring and management. It protects overcharge, overheating and short circuit. It functions as a communication interface, self-diagnosis and power gauge as well.

Lithium-ion batteries which are used for various applications like electronic devices, electric vehicles, industrial machinery etc. are prone to risk of hazards and shock without proper Battery Management System. Therefore, BMS is important for safety. It ably detects all kinds of malfunctions such as the excessive rise of temperature and electric leak; and the state of charge at temperatures in the charging/discharging environment.

Battery Management System Is The Need Of The Hour

The demand for reliable power in critical infrastructure spaces like super-specialty hospitals, banks, and data centres is a must. Especially now, during the COVID-19 era, many of the hospitals highlighted the need for better battery solutions which can extend and improve the functioning of devices like a monitor and other medical devices. Li-ion batteries with BMS integration can fulfil the demand in the future.

The COVID-19 situation has alerted India about its reliance on a country like China for Li-ion batteries, electronic components, and raw material requirements. It is the dire need of the hour to encourage local production of Li-ion batteries and BMS. The policy and infrastructure should be in place to boost the BMS and battery manufacturing sector. This will help the Indian electric vehicles ecosystem and the energy storage market.

Customized Batteries and BMS

It is significant to note that one battery does not fit all the industrial applications. The voltage, capacity, and discharge current may meet the requirements of one device, but other factors like size, internal resistance, temperature range, charging rate, and may not meet the requirements of another device. Therefore, customized industrial batteries are a necessity. A customized BMS meets this requirement as well and it is widely used in sectors like Automotive, Telecom, Portable Device, Energy Storage Management System, and Uninterruptible Power Supply. This shows how BMS will play a key role in charging the future post COVID-19.
